Peru’s infrastructure deficit is proving to be a boon for the local cement industry. The Peruvian Construction Chamber (Capeco) estimates a deficit of 1.2 million housing units at the start of 2011, similar to the past two years. Anhui Conch Cement’s 1Q net profit up 179%

Anhui Conch Cement of China announced Monday that its net profit surged 179.69% YoY in the first quarter of this year, driven by rising cement prices. The company said in a statement that the net profit for the first three months of this year, based on Chinese accounting rules, was CNY2.22bn, up from CNY792.3m in the same period of last year. Brazilian cement major, Votorantim Cimentos, has announced the start-up of two new units in the cities of Vidal Ramos and  and Florianopolis in Santa Catarina state. Pokot Cement plant faces delays, Kenya

Construction of the Pokot Cement factory in Kenya has failed to start, some eight month since Prime Minister Raila Odinga commissioned the project. PT Holcim Indonesia aims to start commercial operations of its 1.7Mta cement plant by the middle of 2013, the company’s chief executive said Monday. "We expect to boost our production capacity to 10Mta by 2013 from 8.3Mt currently," Eamon Ginley told reporters after a shareholders meeting.
