Saudi Arabia may scrap export ban mid-year

Saudi Arabia may lift a 2008 ban on cement exports in the middle of this year, Al Yaum reported, citing people familiar with the Supreme Economic Council. Saudi Arabia awarded new export licenses for cement production companies in October 2009 to reduce cement prices in domestic markets, the newspaper said. The Supreme Economic Council was set up in 1999 to promote the sale of state assets and boost investment by industry.

Holcim defers decision on NZ plant

A decision on building a cement plant at Weston near Oamaru, New Zealand has been further delayed. Holcim New Zealand’s Swiss parent company is considering plans for the plant after it was given the go-ahead by the Environment Court in August 2009. Saudi Cement Co full year net profit up 13 per cent

Saudi Cement Co, the country’s second-largest producer, said on Saturday its net profit rose by 13 per cent in 2010 as it boosted capacity to meet higher local demand. Saudi Cement made a net profit of SAR660m (US$176m) in 2010 compared with SAR582m in the previous year, the firm said in a statement. Kunda Nordic to build new terminals, Estonia

Kunda Nordic Tsement intends to build two-four new terminals in the Kunda port it owns for round timber and other materials. Engineering company Sweco Projekt announced that it would compile a development plan of the Southern part of the port. Lafarge posts stronger fourth quarter results

Lafarge SA on Friday swung to a fourth-quarter net profit of EUR62m and looked ahead to a 2011 in which it said it expects cement demand to grow and to be able to raise its prices and cut its debt by at least EUR2bn. Sales in the three months to December 31 rose 9% to EUR3.96bn, from EUR3.64bn a year earlier, the company said. Spanish consumption continues at minimum levels

Spanish cement consumption in January 2011 was 1.5Mt, a figure which goes back to 1988 consumption levels. Cement production, however, reached 1.6Mt, representing an increase of 7.1% compared to January 2010.  Despite this data, the figures for the cement sector remain negative. In the last 12 months production has declined just over 10% to 26Mt compared to 29Mt YoY.

China cement consumption to top 2bnt

Cement consumption in China is expected to reach a record 2bnt in 2011, up 7% YoY, Xiangzhong Kong, Secretary General of the China Cement Association, told International Cement Review in a recent interview.
