South Africa cement sales down 4.6%

Cement sales in South Africa fell 4.6 per cent YoY in January to 641,860t from 672,676t at the same time in 2010, data from the Cement and Concrete Institute showed on Thursday. Buzzi Unicem’s 2010 turnover declined by 0.9% to €2,648m, of which Dyckerhoff accounted for €1413m and that represented a 3.2% improvement. Pakistan domestic sales rise, exports fall

Pakistan domestic sales during January 2011 were 1.91Mt, registering a growth of seven per cent while exports stood at 0.57Mt, showing a 20 per cent decline compared to the previous month (December 2010). During the first seven months of the current fiscal, domestic cement sales were 12.01Mt, up 9.63% while exports sale were down 17.03% to 5.19Mt during the same period.

Thang Long Cement JSC, a joint venture between the state-run Vietnam Machinery Installation Group (Lilama) and Hanoi General Export Import Corporation (Geleximco), has exported its first batch of cement with a 25,000t delivery to East Africa. Boral looks for improved Australian, Indonesian and Thai results

Boral’s turnover in the six months to the end of December improved by 2.5% to A$2388m (EUR1791m) and the EBITDA by 3.9% to A$269m (EUR207m), with the trading profit advancing by 12% to Aus$149m (EUR 112m).  With a 36.7% drop in the net interest charge to Aus$31m (EUR 23m), the pre-tax profit advanced by 39.3% to A$117m (EUR 88m). Cimpor to restart production in Egypt in three days – report

Portuguese cement producer Cimpor will restart the production in Egypt three days from now. The company’s three production lines in Amnreyah, close to Alexandria, will operate normally in the middle of this week, economic daily Diario Economico wrote in its Tuesday edition. At the end of last week, the difficult situation in Egypt forced Cimpor to stop the whole production at its plant in the country. US monthly shipments rise 3%

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for November 2010 were 5.8Mt. This was 3% higher than shipments in November 2009. Gresik earmarks funds for expansion

Indonesian cement maker PT Semen Gresik plans to set aside IDR6.3 trillion (US$706 million) in funds until 2015 to expand its business. "The funds will be needed to increase annual production capacity to 30.5 million tons in 2015 from 20Mt in 2011," PT Semen Gresik president director Dwi Sutjipto said following a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI at the parliament building here on Monday. Envisioning higher cement demand from rural India, JK Lakshmi Cement plans to set up a 2.7Mt greenfield plant at Durg (Chhattisgarh), and grinding units in Orissa and Jharkhand, a senior company official said.     "We will invest INR12.5bn to set up a 2.7Mta cement unit in Chhattisgarh.
