Spanish demand seen down 15% YoY

The Spanish cement sector is set to close 2010 with a total of 24.5Mt consumed, representing a fall of 15 per cent over the previous year.

Raysut a casualty of cement price war

A price war between Oman and the UAE is creating a rocky outlook for shares of Raysut Cement. The Omani company plans to buy Pioneer Cement Industries, a UAE company, reportedly for about US$180 million, although a final price has yet to be announced. Holcim starts construction of new factory in Indonesia

PT Holcim Indonesia has marked the start of construction of a new cement factory in Tuban, East Java, with ground breaking ceremony yesterday. The project that includes a port facility, will cost around US$450m, Eamon Ginley, the president of he country’s third largest cement producer said. Titan acquires Kosovo cement plant

Titan said Wednesday it has signed an agreement with the Kosovo Privatazation Agency for the purchase of the Sharr cement plant. "The acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on the group’s results, as the plant, with a rated capacity of 600,000tpa, was already under Titan management, on the basis of a lease agreement," the company said.

Azerbaijan output falls

As much as 1.18Mt of cement were produced in Azerbaijan in the first 11 months of 2010, down 2.2 per cent on the year-earlier period.  In 2009, the output reached 1.28Mt. Garadagh Cement JSC is the main producer in the country with an output of 1-1.4Mta, covering 50 per cent of domestic demand.

Gresik looking for acquisition in Southeast Asia

Indonesia’s largest cement producer PT Semen Gresik said it wants to acquire a cement factory in a southeast Asian country to boost production next year. Cement sales in the Dominican Republic have reached nearly 2.7Mt in 2010, and 260,000t of that in November. Cement sales and consumption were around 5.3% higher this year, climbing from a demand of nearly 2.7Mt last year to nearly 2.8Mt in 2010. PT Semen Gresik Tbk allocated US$300m capital expenditure by 2011 mostly for cement mill construction.
