Thailand’s Siam City Cement said on Wednesday it was looking at building a new plant in neighbouring Cambodia that could double its capacity there to 2Mt or more. Managing Director Philippe Arto said at a signing ceremony for a feasibility study to be conducted with Chip Mong Group, a local construction materials distributor, that it could add new capacity of between 1Mta and 1.5Mta. Saudi Arabia production up 6.7% in November

Cement production in Saudi Arabia increased an annual 6.7 per cent in November. November production was 3.36Mt compared with 3.15Mt a year earlier, according to industry data posted today on Yamamah Saudi Cement Co.’s website. Exports rose 15 per cent to 151,000t from 131,000t a year earlier. Saudi Arabia has 13 cement companies with an estimated capacity of 49Mta, according to a report from NCB Capital.

Essroc reduces workforce by 10%, USA

Essroc Cement in Nazareth laid off 19 production and maintenance workers – about 10 per cent of its workforce – due to a weak construction market, the company announced Monday. "We have a production curtailment due to economic conditions," company spokesman Marco Barbesta said. "We hope to get them back working at the end of February, but it all depends on business conditions." Essroc’s payroll is down to about 160 people after the layoffs, Barbesta said.

Dangote may seek US$5bn in London share sale

Dangote Cement Plc is working with three banks to raise as much as US$5bn in a London share sale, Bloomberg quoted two sources as saying. Dangote will probably seek US$3bn-$5bn in a London sale of global depositary receipts, valuing the company at as much as US$20bn, said the people, who declined to be identified because the plans are private. Lithuania: Akmene Cement’s Jan-Oct revenues up 21%

Akmenes Cementas, Lithuania’s only cement manufacturer, said on Monday that its sales revenues for January through October rose by 21 per cent to LTL135.995m (EUR 39.4m), up from LTL112.516m a year ago. Cement sales increased by 40 per cent to 712,100t, Richardas Sudaris, the company’s public relations officer, told BNS. Possible Saudi Arabia line closures?

Saudi Arabian cement companies may stop operating some production lines and start laying off workers, al-Youm reported, citing Eastern Province Cement Co. General Manager Zamil Al Muqrin. Production capacity is bigger than local demand as Saudi companies are banned from exporting, the newspaper said, citing Al Muqrin. One Saudi company has ceased operations on 10 out of 12 production lines and has laid off 550 workers, the newspaper added, without naming the company.

The Polish cement sector is likely to post a rise in production levels during 2010, making up for losses in 2009 and is heading towards a fast growth in production, according to Jan Deja, head of the Polish Cement Association (SPC).
