Cementos Cosmos Toral in EUR1.8m investment, Spain

Cimpor’s Spanish cement factory in Toral de los Vados, is to benefit from a EUR1.8bn investment to improve environmental measures and transport logistics. Cementos Cosmos will invest more than half that amount, around EUR1m will be put towards sustainability initiatives including improving emission control measures. The company has been affected by the downturn in local cement demand, with sales down 25 per cent in the current fiscal compared to figures witnessed in 2008.

Oversupply in the south India and incremental supply in the west are among the reasons cement prices have seen a fresh drop in several parts of the country, led by the southern region.

Turkish company to develop Iraq plant

A Turkish company has received approval to develop the Sinjar Cement Plant and invest it for 15 years, according to a source from the Northern Cement State Company (NCSC). 
The Turkish company received December 2, approval to invest about US$100m in the Sinjar Cement Plant, located northwest of Mosul city, Hussein al-Khafaji told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Ghacem to expand capacity, Ghana?

Ghana Cement Works (GHACEM) is to expand the production capacity of its factories at Takoradi and Tema to meet increasing demand for cement, Jean Marc Junon, Chairman of the Board of GHACEM, said on Thursday. 
He told local press that the Takoradi and Tema factories were each producing 1.2Mta.

Japan: hiking exports to salvage profits

Japanese manufacturers of industrial materials are raising export prices in a bid to beef up profit margins that have been thinned by a strong yen since fall, according to reports from the Nikkei of Japan.

Murli board okays sale of plant, India

India’s Murli Industries Ltd Friday said its board has approved the sale of its cement plant in the western Maharashtra state. 
The plant began operations in March and has a capacity of 3Mta. 
 On November 22, Murli Industries, responding to a news report, said it was in preliminary talks with overseas cement companies to sell the plant in Chandrapur. 
 The Economic Times newspaper reported that Cemex has offered US$550m to acquire the Chandrapur facility.


Pakistan seeks to cash in on cement exports

PPC plans to invest in Mozambique - report

Pretoria Portland Cement Ltd. plans to invest US$200m in a new cement factory in southern Mozambique in February, Radio Mozambique reported. The plant will have the capacity to produce 600,000tpa, the Maputo-based broadcaster said, citing Inorico Borier, managing director of Kangela Ltd., an official representative of PPC in Mozambique. PPC is completing environmental-impact surveys and other studies, Radio Mozambique said.
