Raysut first-half profit falls 21%, Oman

Raysut Cement, the Sultanate’s largest cement manufacturer, registered a 21 per cent decline in profit before tax for the six-month period ended June 30, 2010. Profit before tax decreased to OMR3.65m this year, from OMR17.30m during the corresponding period of last year.

Mohammed bin Alawi Ali Muqaibal, Chairman of the Board of Directors, attributed the decline in profit to competition from overseas suppliers a trend that began in the second half of last year.

Malaysian cement producers are looking forward to a brighter second half in 2010 in anticipation of the roll-out of much delayed projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).

Trading on Saudi Yanbu Cement suspended after fire

The Saudi bourse regulator on Monday suspended trading on Yanbu Cement Co after a fire erupted at one of its production lines. "The other production lines are operating at full capacity and the plant’s sales are not going to be halted. Both the production and the plant are totally insured," Yanbu said in a statement. A section of cement manufacturers has asked the government to bring parity in coal prices. Some of the older players enjoy the advantage of assured coal linkage from Coal India Limited (CIL), while about 55 per cent buy it through the e-auction route. Vietnam cement prices expected to remain stable

Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Domestic Market Management Bureau has predicted cement prices in Vietnam will remain stable in the third quarter of this year when the rainy season starts. The domestic cement sales and output will fall slightly during the rainy season, the bureau was quoted by the state-run Vietnam New Agency as saying late Monday. Retail cement prices are now offered at VND950,000-VND1.15m/t in the north and VND1.1m and VND1.4m in the south.

Sales by 12 Saudi cement firms rose 12.3 percent during the second quarter but the listed manufacturers are not doing as well as non-listed rivals, according to data released by Yamama Cement on Monday. Irish construction shrank at the slowest pace in almost three years in June as the economy stabilised after the recession, according to an index that tracks the industry.   The Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 44.9 in June from 40 the previous month, Ulster Bank said in a monthly report released today.   The index has been below 50, which indicates contraction, for 37 months. L&T Finance, a subsidiary of Larsen and Toubro, acquired 8.10 million equity shares of the company from seven promoters of Panyam Cements on July 7, according to statement filed to the stock exchange.
