Philippines: prices increased by two producers

Cement prices in the Philippines have increased, with two cement firms deciding to hike their prices as a result of the power crisis in Mindanao. Republic Cement went up by P5 per bag, while Holcim Philippines adjusted their price by P10.

Kenya cement makers shift to coal use

The East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC) intends to shift its source of energy from fuel oil to coal as an increasing number of local companies opt to generate their own electricity to lower power costs, improve reliability of supply and add new sources of revenue.

Holcim requests Mason City tax break, USA

Holcim is requesting that Mason City officials review the company’s tax assessment for the year. According to local press reports, Holcim it not happy with how its land along the North Federal is currently valued by Mason City’s assessor.

The city figures the main plant site which is nearly 153 acres, is worth around US$6.8m. That means their tax bill this year is slightly more than US$225,000.

New plant to be constructed in Thua Thien-Hue, Vietnam

Authorities of Vietnam’s central province of Thua Thien-Hue have given approval to Song Hong Corporation to build Long Tho II cement plant next July. The plant will have a total investment of VND763.6bn (US$40.2m) and an annual production capacity of 350,000t of cement, the Phap luat Vietnam newspaper reported Thursday. The plant, to be situated in the Huong Tra district, is slated to begin operation in February 2014.

Roanoke Cement Company’s Castle Hayne terminal was honoured this week by the North Carolina state government for its safety record. The Vicat Group has announced the finalisation of financing for the Vicat Sagar greenfield cement plant in India, a project conducted in partnership with Sagar Cements Limited, and in which the Vicat group holds a majority shareholding. Brazil: cement market to advance 18% this year

The Brazilian cement market is set to grow by 18% over the course of 2010 when compared to 2009. In the first five months of 2010, cement sales totalled 23Mt, an advance of 16.4% over January-May 2009, according to the Sindicato Nacional da Industria do Cimento (Snic). Pakistan cement margins expected to improve next quarter

Cement margins for Pakistan producers are expected to improve next quarter on the back of price increase and expected reduction in demand-supply gap, according to an analyst. USGS: April shipments rise 8% YoY

Latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) show total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for April 2010 were about 6.5Mt. This was about 8% higher than shipments in April 2009. Year-to-date shipments were about 18.8Mt, down by about 8% from those of the same period in 2009.
