Union employees at the Hercules Cement Co in Stockertown are entering their second week on the picket line. Teamster Local 773 Chief Steward Tim Groller said there has been no contact with company officials since they started striking June 14. The economic downturn in Germany has left a sharp decline in cement consumption. Housing currently has a cement consumption share of 22.5 per cent (5.7Mt) – a new low. Sales of cement in Saudi Arabia remained weak, up only 11.8 per cent YoY, the second lowest growth figure in 16 months. Five cement producers are completing new investments worth US$645.6m to bolster production capacity by 11.5 per cent or equivalent to 5.38Mta. The new investment is to bolster national cement production capacity from 46.94Mt to 52.32Mta to anticipate a surge in domestic demand in the next several years. According to statistics of Building Materials Management department (Ministry of Construction), there are 105 cement manufacturers in the country. The capacity of the whole industry could reach 61Mt. Cement, steel prices in Vietnam expected to climb

Retail prices of cement and steel products were expected to increase by the end of this year because of unexpected fluctuation on the domestic market. Nguyen Tien Thoa, head of the Ministry of Finance’s Pricing Department, said the prices would increase because distribution was not adequately controlled and demand was increasing. Besides, some enterprises did not abide by price stabilisation regulations so the prices would go up in the building season, which began this month, he said.

The value-added output of China’s building materials industry increased 20.3 per cent YoY in May this year, a growth 0.5 per cent higher than in April, according to statistics released by the China Building Materials Federation.
