Chinese plan US$12.5m white cement plant in Lindi

A Chinese firm will construct a US$12.5m cement factory in Lindi, south of Dar es Salaam, starting this September. With a capacity of 300,000tpa, the factory is expected to strengthen Tanzania’s position as a cement supplier in East Africa. In the first five months of the year, domestic sales of cement have been reduced by 17 per cent compared with the same period last year, and equate to 9.3Mt. The German cement industry registered 2.22Mt of domestic cement sales in May 2010 – up 0.5 per cent from 2.14Mt in May 2009. From January 2010 to May 2010 the industry recorded 7.66Mt of domestic cement shipments, whereas over the same period in 2009 cement shipments amounted to 8.22Mt. Indonesian state owned cement maker PT Semen Gresik will establish a joint venture with Japan’s Marubeni Corp to acquire kraft paper producer PT Kertas Kraft Aceh (KKA), according to reports by Asia Pulse. Cement manufacturers in the Northern region have pushed up price of 50 kg bag of cement by PKR40 after the budget to PKR285-290 from PKR245-250, according to local reports. Retail prices for bagged cement are reported at VND69,000-70,000 per bag from Ha Tien 1, VND68,000-69,000 from Holcim, and VND65,000-66,000 from Nghi Son Cement, falling VND1,000-1,200 per bag on average. According to retail stores, cement consumption is weaker compared to the same period last month with estimated reduction of 40-50%.

Cement exports from Bulgaria have plummeted in the last two years, especially exports by sea across the Black Sea, Alex Car, General Manager of Deynya Cement (Italcementi) has told local agency BTA.
