Caribbean states look to monitor trading activity

East Caribbean states are looking to implement a cement trade monitoring mechanism in the region due to frequent supply shortages which are reportedly hampering construction activity in the sub-region. Iraq bans white cement imports from Iran

Iraq has placed a ban on imports of Iranian white cement from the Shalamcheh and Chazabeh borders, Sadeq Sava'edi, the deputy head of Khuzestan's Cement Exporters Union said on Tuesday. "The ban has been in effect for three months now," the ISNA News Agency quoted Savaedi as saying. "This while the Iraqis are importing white cement from other borders," Savaedi said. Azerbaijan increases imports from Georgia

In the 1H13 249,770t of cement valued at US$18.45m was exported from Georgia to Azerbaijan, according to Georgia's national statistics service, GruzStat. The share of this category in the total volume of Georgian exports to Azerbaijan in the 1H13 constituted 5.54 per cent. In comparison with the same period, the export of cement from Georgia increased by 28.48 per cent or by 53,700t.

Peru: cement shipments rise

Peru's ASOCEM cement association reports that in July its members delivered 88,277t of cement in the domestic market. The January to July shipments are up YoY for the same period by 11 per cent rise, while a total of 16,349t of cement were also exported during July 2013.

Although China's cement sales are outside their peak season, the average cement price in the country has continued to rise over the past week, according to the latest data from industry information provider Digital Cement. Zambezi Portland Cement Limited (ZPC) has reduced its export sales by 50 per cent, effective from 1 August  2013, to cater for the increased demand of the product on the local market. All-India cement prices saw an uptrend led by price hikes across all regions in the country. The southern region saw an average price rise of INR30/bag (US$0.50), the highest among all regions, which took the all-India average June 2013 prices to INR308/bag (US$5.10) as compared to INR294/bag (US$4.86) in May 2013. Saudi Port Authority (SPA) says cement shipments have been coming since the start of implementing the decrees of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to import 10Mt of cement to cover local demand. Cement prices in Ghana have been rising by the day with retail prices currently around GHS274 (US$136). Ex-factory prices are cheaper than retail prices so the tariff posted at the Ghacem (HeidelbergCement) plant on 24 June indicated that a bag of cement costs GHS260 (US$129), effective 20 June 2013, when buying 1000 bags or above.
