Protests again Semen Indonesia plant

Approximately 300 people from Rembang, Central Java, have marched 150km in protest of the construction of a cement plant in the area by state-owned Semen Indonesia. The march was undertaken in a bid to force Central Java Governor, Ganjar Pranowo, to revoke the environmental permit issued to Semen Indonesia for the project in 2012.

President of PT Semen Baturaja, Pamudji Rahardjo, announced that the state company would bring its second cement plant online next year. The Baturaja II plant is currently under construction with a planned production capacity of 1.85Mta. The new plant represents a IDR3.4tn (US$254.5m) investment. PT Semen Indonesia’s domestic cement sales dropped six per cent YoY to 2.55Mt in October from 2.71Mt. However, the company saw its export sales rise from 28,302t in October 2015 to 62,829t one year later. For the first 10 months of 2016, domestic sales edged up from 20.93Mt in 10M15 to 21.19Mt. Cement exports rose 15.2 per cent YoY from 419,767t to 483,745t.

PT Indocement sees 12% drop in 9M16 sales

In the first nine months of 2016, Indonesia’s PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa noted a 12 per cent YoY fall in sales to IDR11.3trn (US$866m). The company’s net profit of the period slipped 2.2 per cent to IDR3.15trn while the cost of sales was down 7.2 per cent YoY to IDR6.6trn.

Publicly-listed Holcim Indonesia reported 5.3 per cent sales growth YoY to IDR6.91trn (US$530m) in the first nine months of 2016. PT Semen Baturaja announced a near-34 per cent fall in January-September 2016 net profit from 9M15 to IDR174.74bn (US$13.4m) from IDR264.66bn. The drop in net profit was attributed to the rise in the cost of goods at a time when revenues increased only marginally. Revenues in the first nine months of 2016 edged up to IDR1.04trn from IDR1.03trn in 9M15.

According to the Chairman of the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI), Widodo Santoso, national cement consumption is expected to grow by 8.04 per cent in 2017, reaching 68Mt. Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Erlangga Hartarto has commissioned a new cement plant of PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk in Cileungsi, Bogor District, West Java.
