Indonesia consumed 62Mt of cement in 2016, up three per cent on the previous year, but below the Indonesian Cement Association’s (ASI) target of 65Mt, the Jakarta Globe reports. PT Semen Indonesia Tbk made a net profit of IDR4.01trn (US$301.6m) in 2016, which was lower than the IDR4.52trn the previous year. State-owned cement company PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk is  targeting 4-5 per cent sales growth in 2017. The first 11 months of 2016 Indonesian cement sales reached a total of 56.5Mt, up 2.8 per cent YoY from domestic cement sales in the same period one year earlier. Semen Indonesia has designated IDR6trn (US$449.1m) for capital expenditure in 2017 to finance its expansion programme. The Indonesian cement market is seeing a steep fall in cement sales as the year draw to a close. Cement sales volume during January-November 2016 was almost stagnant with November sales down nine per cent when compared with the same period last year to 5.74Mt, according to the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). Despite protests, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo has issued a new environmental permit to Semen Indonesia for its plant in Rembang. The new plant is almost complete and although some local residents have fought its opening, many are highlighting the benefits it will provide such as 1200 jobs. Semen Indonesia has denied that the new works will damage the environment.
