FIs to sell one-third of ACC stake in open offer

With the Holcim open offer for ACC coming to a close on Monday, shares have started trickling in. The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) did not hinder the deal for acquisition of cement assets of Inteco by Eurocement Group. The FAS approved this acquisition and did not set any behavior conditions for Eurocement Group.  Eurocement Group controls cement plants in six regions with the aggregate output of 11.3 million tons of cement per year (according to company’s data for 2004). Paraguay’s state cement company Industria Nacional del Cemento (INC) posted a US$232,000 net profit in 2004, after closing six years in the red, newspaper La Nacion quoted company head Amlcar Troche as saying.  Last year’s result was helped by a drop in cement and clinker production costs, based on the purchase of lower cost supplies, raw material and replacement parts, said the report.  The INC is Paraguay’s sole cement producer and has installed capacity of some 675,000tpa.  The company pla...

Indonesia’s Semen Padang targets higher profits

Cement producer PT Semen Padang, a wholly-owned unit  of state-run PT Semen Gresik, said it expects its net profit to rise to 109  bln rupiah this year from last year’s 62 bln on the back of higher production  and following the management’s settlement of a dispute with workers. Saudi Arabian Cement, Italcementi Enter Cooperation

Saudi cement producer Arabian Cement Company (ACC) signed on April 5, 2005 a cooperation agreement with Italian cement manufacturer Italcementi Group, local media reported on April 6, 2005.  The agreement comes as part of ACC’s strategy for expansion in the region. Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly carry out a study on the construction of a new cement plant in Saudi Arabia. 

Concrete prices fall in wake of cheaper cement

The Cement & Concrete Association Malaysia (CCAM) confirmed that a price war is under way in the industry, but said cement prices have dropped only in certain areas.   Association president Othman Abdul Rani told Business Times that the CCAM has no say over its members’ pricing policy. Argentina’s Portland cement output increased 5.7 per cent year-on-year in March 2005, to 564,393t, the association of Portland cement producers said on April 6, 2005.  Cement production in Argentina increased 9.6 per cent month-on-month in March 2005. Pakistani cement demand increased by 12 per cent in the country during third quarter of the current financial year as it stood at 3.9Mt compared to 3.5Mt in the same period last fiscal.
