Contractors file cement claims

The UAE Contractors Association is to ask its 700 members to submit claims for losses due to high cement prices in the local market, reported Gulf News. Officials said once the claims had been assessed they would submit them to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce to examine ways to recover the losses or part of them.

ENCI cuts 470 jobs

Cement manufacturer ENCI announced plans Tuesday to cut 270 jobs in the Netherlands and a further 200 in Belgium. A subsidiary of Heidelberg Cement, ENCI employs 1200 workers in the Netherlands and most job losses will take place in Maastricht, but the grinding plant will continue to operate in the southern Dutch city. Budget boost to increase INC 2004 production, Paraguay

Paraguay’s government has passed a law increasing state cement company Industria Nacional del Cemento’s (INC) annual budget by 46.1bn guaraniés (US$7.7m), local paper ABC Color reported. The Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC) registered a net profit of 132m Qatari riyals (US$36.3m) in the first nine months of 2004, up from 111m riyals (US$30.5m) in the same period of 2003. North Dakota-based Knife River Corp., parent of Hawaiian Cement, has acquired Pohakulepo Quarry on Maui for an undisclosed price. Cement consumption up 3.78% in nine months, Spain

Cement consumption in the nine months to September was up 3.78 percent from the same period a year earlier at 36.23 metric tones, industry association Oficemen said. Production of cement in the same period was up 4.31 percent year-on-year at 34.85 million metric tons. Exports grew 12.7 percent in the nine months, while imports fell 1.9 percent. Consumption in September alone was up 4.27 percent.

Yamama Cement Co Jan-Sept 2004 net profit reaches $119.8m, Saudi Arabia

Saudi cement producer Yamama Cement Company (YCC) registered a 59.8 per cent YoY increase in net profit to 449.4m Saudi riyals (US$119.8m) for the first nine months of 2004. The profit for the period included extraordinary income of 144.8m riyals ($38.6m) generated from the sale of YCC’s stake in the Saudi Industrial Investment Group (SIIG) in April 2004. YCC sold 2.695Mt of cement in the first nine months of 2004, up from 2.364Mt.
