Ash Grove to build US$250m plant

The royalty on mining production proposed by Chile’s government to the Congress will not only affect copper miners, but also cement manufacturers since production costs will go up. The government of Chile plans to tax mining companies by 1% of their net annual sales. Specialists say that the measure will affect competitiveness on the domestic market since imported cement may be sold at lower prices compared to the national product.

Brazilian cement company Votorantim is analyzing the possibility of building a cement plant in the  capital of Bolivia’s Santa Cruz region, according to local news reports. An umbrella group of Philippine cement producers said that it will appeal a recent Supreme Court ruling that struck down a special tariff on imports imposed by the government.
