New thrust on infrastructure to boost demand in cement sector

The Indian cement sector has largely been left unaffected by the current Budget. While the industry has welcomed the various initiatives undertaken on the infrastructure front, it feels that it could have done with a reduction on excise duties. Cement deliveries jump 30.5% in June , Argentina

Portland cement deliveries in Argentina jumped 30.5 per cent in June to 489,394t, compared to the same month last year, the country’s Portland cement producers association said in a release. Saudi cement producer, Eastern Province Cement Company (EPC), reported an 19 per cent YoY increase in net profit to 157m Saudi riyals (US$41.m) for the first six months of 2004, the company’s director general, Zamil Abdul Rahman al-Muqrin, said. The Arawak Cement Company will be raising the price of cement “imminently, not before next week”.  A source at the company told local press that the increase would be to the order of 12 per cent to15 per cent – “closer to 15”.  He added this was the first price “adjustment” for cement since 2000, and was because of a rise in labour and fuel costs. Holcim Romania, a unit of Swiss cement company Holcim Ltd, said it plans to invest EUR40m (US$49.4m) by 2006 to protect environment. No Holcim cement in collapsed Paris terminal

Holcim Ltd has said that it didn’t ship any cement for the building of the Charles de Gaulle airport terminal in Paris which collapsed last May. "We did deliver cement to Charles de Gaulle, but not to the part where (the disaster) happened," company spokesman Roland Walker said. The collapse of a vaunted roof of Charles de Gaulle’s 2E terminal on May 23 killed four people. French authorities have suggested one of the reasons for the disaster may be faulty concrete.
