Chinese company signs MoU for Namibian plant

China-based Asian and African Business Management has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Namibian company Whale Rock Cement for a US$350m cement plant. The signing ceremony was attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Xin Shunkang, and the chairperson of Asian and African Business Management, Zhang Jimin, according to reports by China Daily. Spain: monthly demand up but slowdown noted

Spain’s cement consumption in the first nine months of 2015 increased by 4.8 per cent, but the growth rate decelerated in the past three months, according to Oficemen, the country’s cement association. Production in construction down by 0.2% in euro area

In August 2015 compared with July 2015, seasonally-adjusted production in the construction sector fell by 0.2 per cent in the euro area (EA19) and by 1.2 per cent in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In July 2015, production in construction grew by 0.4 per cent in both zones. Tunisia: Ciments de Bizerte 3Q15 sales up 2.3%

Turnover of Les Ciments de Bizerte advanced 2.3 per cent YoY in 3Q15. Although sales volumes in the domestic market fell by 3.7 per cent YoY, revenues rose by 21.4 per cent YoY. The company saw a decline in export revenues on the back of a volatile market in Algeria and a lack of demand in Libya. Clinker output rose by 55,050t or 47.5 per cent when compared to 3Q14.

Ciments du Maroc demolishes Anza plant

Ciments du Maroc, part of Italcementi, is currently demolishing the old Anza cement works near Agadir. The plant was taken out of service more than five years ago, after the commissioning of the Aït Baha works. The site will be rehabilitated in a project called Agadir Oasis as financial partners, real estate developers and leisure park companies move in.

Paraguay to import 200,000 bags of cement

Paraguay’s Industria Nacional del Cemento (INC) estimate it will import around 200,000 bags of cement per month to cover domestic demand this year, according to its CEO, Jorge Méndez. "The idea is to buy at similar cost to what we produce in Paraguay and from countries of the region such as Argentina and Brazil," said Mr Mendez. He added that currently the production of cement is about 50,000 bags per day and for next week, that will increase to cover the amount that came producing normally.

PCA: US cement industry records its most energy efficient year yet

The amount of energy required to produce 1t of cement decreased 1.1 per cent in 2014 from the previous year’s levels, according to PCA’s latest US Labor-Energy Input Survey. Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem), the country’s leading cement producer, sold 16.32Mt of cement and clinker in the first nine months of this year, up 1.5 per cent from a year earlier. Of the volume, 14.87Mt of cement and clinker were sold in domestic market, up 8.6 per cent YoY while 1.44Mt were exported, down 39.4 per cent, the corporation said on its website.
