Vietnam: Jan cement sales down 18.6% YoY

Vietnam’s domestic sales declined by 18.6 per cent YoY in the first month of this year to 2.93Mt due to subdued real estate activity, the country’s Ministry of Construction (MoC) has said. Exports during January 2014 totalled 820,000t, including 170,000t of cement, the MoC said on its website. Cementos Cosmos restarts Toral kiln, Spain

After a two-month shutdown and an investment of around EUR2m, Cementos Cosmos has lit the kiln at its Toral de los Vados plant following an upgrade project.  The works were carried out to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of the facility and include a remodelling of the kiln to reduce energy consumption. The project has brought Toral, which celebrates its 90th year of continued operation, up to date and transformed it into a modern and efficient works.

The state cabinet of Himachal Pradesh (HP) has revoked the cement license granted to Jaiprakash Associates for a 2Mta cement plant for failing to get construction of the project off the ground, according to local press reports. Lacklustre start to year for Spain

Spanish cement producers can only hope for a better 2014 as demand figures for January 2014 show a 13.6 per cent fall to 764,011t, according to the country’s cement association, Oficemen. However, the rate of market contraction appears to be slowing somewhat. Over the past 12 months, consumption fell by 18.7 per cent. But recovery seems some time away as the result is worse than predicted. Oficemen had indicated in December that it expects a 7-8 per cent decrease for 2014.

China prices dragged down by eastern decline

China’s cement prices fell 0.7 per cent in the week through 16 February due to a 2.8 per cent decline in eastern China. Prices in all other regions were largely flat, according to a report by The China Perspective. Nationwide cement inventory level rose to 71.6 per cent of full from 67 per cent due to weaker demand in the eastern and south-central regions. Zambia: Dangote’s Ndola plant on track for July commissioning

Dangote is expected to commission its new cement factory in Ndola in July this year, senior general manager for Dangote Projects, Anand Kameshwar, has indicated. In an interview with All Africa news, Kameshwar said installation of major equipment at the plant by Sinoma Engineering of China was nearly complete. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia has officially inaugurated Semen Tonasa’s Line V project and power plant in Pangkajene Island District, South Sulawesi. Authorities of the Quang Tri province in central Vietnam are to withdraw the investment licence of a cement plant project due to sluggish implementation.
