Lafarge to spend US$20m on Harare plant upgrade

Lafarge Cement is planning to invest US$20m in the rehabilitation of its Harare works in Zimbabwe to boost volumes. The company aims to increase utilisation from the current 70 to 90 per cent once work is complete. Cockburn Cement has cut 44 jobs at its Munster cement plant in Australia and indicated that another 20 further jobs could go over the next 18 months as it restructures its operations. Ambuja Cements is set to resume mining operations in Himachal Pradesh after the High Court granted a stay on the Ministry of Environment and Forest’s (MoEF) suspension order which was issued at the beginning of February 2014. Pakistan’s export volumes fell 7.5 per cent YoY in the first seven months of the current Pakistan fiscal, while revenues were also down 13 per cent over the same period. To alleviate the present cement shortage, Groupe Industriel des Ciments d’Algérie (GICA) has appointed Star Commercial Ltd of the British Virgin Islands to import 240,000t of cement. Algeria’s supply-demand gap currently runs over 5Mt as the country’s cement plants produce 18Mt.
