Russian cement sector withstands crisis

Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and unprecedented sanctions imposed on Russia, the Russian cement industry is withstanding the crisis with volumes continuing to expand so far this year. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement, including imports, in the USA and Puerto Rico saw a 7.3 per cent YoY advance to 10.9Mt in August 2022, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The price of cement in Spain hit a record high as it increased by 18 per cent in September, the highest increase since the historical series started in 2002, according to the country’s National Institute of Statistics (INE). Fiona sends Puerto Rican cement sales down

Hurricane Fiona has sent Puerto Rican cement sales in a downward spiral as sales in September 2022 dropped by 21.1 per cent YoY to 986,000 bags of 94lb, or 42,041t, the largest fall since 2020, according to Sin Comillas. Domestic cement production declined 17.5 per cent YoY to 509,900 bags, or 21,741t in September 2022. The decrease represents the first fall in six months.

Iranian cement market notes 1% growth

Iran’s cement consumption saw a 1.2 per cent uptick YoY to 5.79Mt in September 2022 from 5.72Mt, according to the Iranian Cement Association. Cement production reached 5.92Mt, down 1.5 per cent YoY when compared with 6.01Mt in September 2021, while clinker output declined 3.2 per cent to 6.61Mt from 6.83Mt in September 2021. Cement dispatches in Peru slipped one per cent to 1.229Mt in September 2022 from 1.235Mt in September 2021, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem.
