Wataniya insures Saudi Cement Co assets

Saudi Cement Co, Saudi Arabia’s second-largest cement producer by market value, awarded an insurance contract to Wataniya Insurance Co, the company said in a statement filed with the Saudi bourse, according to Bloomberg. Wataniya will insure Saudi Cement’s “assets and possessions”, though the contract does not include medical insurance. The annual insurance premium is estimated at SAR8m (US$2.1m).

Guyana cement prices hiked

From January 1, customers of TCL Guyana Inc will be asked to pay an increase of 9.4 per cent in the price of cement, the company said. 
According to TCL, the proposed price adjustment is to be blamed on the increase of bulk cement at source.

Ethiopia: no further licences for new projects

The Ethiopian government has stopped accepting foreign investments in cement projects, according to local news reports. The Ministry of Industry (MoI) recently informed the Ethiopian Investment Agency not to accept new investment projects. Lafarge executive in fatal ski accident

Lafarge executive, Ronald Greg Sheardown, 45, has been identified as the man who died while heli-skiiing in British Columbia, Canada, according to local reports. The Canadian father of three was in a group of 11 skiers at Revelstoke when the avalanche struck. Mr Sheardown had recently been promoted to chief executive officer for Lafarge’s operations covering several Persian Gulf countries. He was to take up the new position in early 2012.

Indonesia cement consumption to rise 7% in 2012

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister P K Dhumal today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare cement as controlled item and bring it under the Essential Commodities Act to make it cheaper in the state. India: Murli Industries to double its cement capacity

Murli Industries, an Indian city-based business group, which recently forayed into the cement sector plans to double the capacity utilisation of its plant to 80% by 2012. The company built a 3Mta plant at Chandrapur in 2010 which is now being run at 40% capacity. A 50MW power plant has also been set up as a part of the venture. While current cement demand is low, the company expects to be ready to make the most of opportunities in 2014 when it says demand will pick up.
