US shipments edge up in July

Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for July 2011 were 6.8Mt, according to preliminary data released by the USGS. This was only slightly higher than shipments in July 2010. Shipments for the year through July were 38.8Mt, essentially unchanged from the same period in 2010. Colacem Canada plans to invest nearly CAD225m (US$221m) in a 3000tpd cement plant along Highway 17, Champlain, Quebec. Cemex fined after death of an employee, UK

Cemex’s cement factory in Rugby has been fined GBP200,000 after the death of an employee in an on-site explosion. Peter Reynolds, a 28-year-old dad, died at the Lawford Road plant in January 2008 when a powerful explosion forced him through the wall of the building and he fell 30ft to his death.
