Ex-Holcim CEO expand stake in company past 20%

Thomas Schmidheiny, former chief executive of Holcim Ltd, has increased his holdings in the world’s largest cement maker by sales past 20%. Schmidheiny’s investment vehicle, Schweizerische Cement Industrie AG, has increased its holding from 18.2% to 20.1% of the voting rights at Holcim, the Swiss company said late Thursday. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for July 2011 were 6.8Mt. This was only slightly higher than shipments in July 2010. Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant employees returned to work Monday following a deadly shooting rampage there last week involving a disgruntled truck driver who shot nine people and killed three. The company announced today that workers at its Permanente plant are returning to work and that the plant is open for business. Goldsun inaugurates Hunan facility, China

Goldsun Development & Construction & Corp recently inaugurated its second cement plant in Loudi City, Hunan province, China, where it will invest US$150m to build two cement lines, each with 2Mta capacity. 

Goldsun spokesperson, SY Chiu, said the first-stage cement production line, with 2Mt cement capacity, will start clinker production during this month and commence production by the end of November.

Cement Australia considers fate of Kandos site

Kandos cement works employees enjoyed their final days on-site last week but questions still remain over the future of the site. On Thursday afternoon a spokeswoman on behalf of Cement Australia said the company was continuing discussions with government and private entities regarding future opportunities for the site. About 50 firefighters tackled a blaze at Lafarge Dunbar’s cement works on Wednesday afternoon after a fire broke out. The alarm was raised just after 12:30 at Lafarge cement works in Dunbar, where there was a fire in a concrete bunker housing about 50t of rubber tyre chips. GuocoCapital thinks Anhui Conch’s average selling price will peak in 4Q11, with an average of CNY325/t for 2011, which translates into revenue growth of 50.6% to CNY52bn assuming management’s sales target of 160Mt is achieved. Zambezi Portland Cement Limited (ZPC) has increased production of cement to 1300tpd from 1100tpd following the installation of new machinery and modification of other facilities at the plant. ZPC managing director Antonio Ventriglia said the company has increased cement production to meet the increasing demand.
