South African monthly sales down 2.1%

Cement sales in South Africa during March 2011 were down 2.1 per cent month-on-month, data from the South African Cement and Concrete Institute showed. Year-to-date (Jan-March 2011) sales were 2.44Mt, 4.3 per cent  lower than the same period in 2010. JP Cement prepares to expand its Shahabad plant, India

JP Cement Corporation Ltd is set to undertake the expansion and upgrading of its plant at the industrial township of Shahabad in Chitapur state. The plans include a switch from wet-process to dry-process technology and an increase in the production capacity from 0.5Mta to 6Mta with a 70MW captive power plant. The company said that orders for dry-process technology machinery have already been placed and it is waiting the renewal of a mining licence.

Irish construction sees 46th month of decline

Activity in the Irish construction sector has been falling for almost four years, with the latest construction index from Ulster Bank showing the sector has been declining for 46 months. Vietnam producers likely to raise prices by 12-15%

Cement producers in Vietnam are likely to raise prices between 12-%, Nguyen Van Diep, an official of the Vietnam Cement Association said. The hike is attributed to the increasing prices of input materials including petroleum, coal and power, the Thoi bao kinh te newspaper quoted Diep as saying. New Port Kembla mill faces opostition from freight operator

A new cement grinding mill proposed for the edge of Port Kembla harbour is being opposed by freight operator Pacific National, which has cited 16 near misses at the rail crossing in five years to argue the development is not safe. Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has urged Kenyan cement producers Athi River Mining (ARM) and Bamburi Cement to immediately settle their dispute out of court to allow other investors to start a limestone mining factory in Mutomo district.

Los Altos committee finds Lehigh emissions pose no risk

An ad hoc committee has wrapped up its investigation into a local cement plant’s emissions. The committee found the Lehigh Southwest cement plant is emitting toxins 100 to 300 times below the trigger level.

Major Japanese cement manufacturers with factories in northeastern Japan ravaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster are battling to restore their plants’ operations, reports Kyodo News. Górazdze Cement completes modernisation, Poland

Górażdże Cement has completed the modernisation of its Kiln Line No 2 –the largest investment in the cement producer’s 30-year history. 
At the end of March Górażdże, owned by HeidelbergCement of Germany, completed assembly of machines and equipment and launched the new line start-up phase. In the first week of April in the new plant produced the first trial batch of clinker.

Himachal Pradesh has earned a revenue of more than INR130 crore in the past three years from eight cement companies, a minister said on Wednesday. "A sum of INR136.34 crore has been earned by the state from cement firms," Industries Minister Kishan Kapoor said in a written statement in the assembly.
