Belarus to increase production

According to Vice Prime Minister Anatoly Kalinin, the development of Belarus’ construction industry is hampered by a shortfall of 2Mta of cement. However, the modernsation of three Belarusian cement plans are currently in progress adding a further 1.8Mta of capacity. Indo Zinc rights issue of shares, India

Indo Zinc Ltd plans to raise close to INR2.9bn rupees through a rights issue of equity shares and optionally convertible redeemable preference shares, the company informed the exchanges today.     A company’s share issue committee has decided that it will raise INR1.11bn through a rights issue of ordinary shares in the ratio of 11 shares for each held in the company at 22.50 rupees apiece.

Alexandria Cement’s net profit rises, Egypt

Egypt’s Alexandria Cement said it posted a 17.3 per cent rise in 2010 net profit to EGP590.9m (US$99.34m), the stock exchange said on Wednesday. The firm, a subsidiary of Greek cement maker Titan Cement reported net profit of EGP503.6 million pounds for the year 2009.

UltraTech plans expansion of Rawan works, India

UltraTech Cement plans to expand cement manufacturing capacity at its plant in Rawan village in Simga. It will expand the cement capacity from 3Mta to 6.5Mta and clinker production from 2.1Mta to 6.5Mta. Its coal-based power unit will be ramped up from 30MW to 80MW. The company is currently awaiting environmental clearances. 

Vietnam first-quarter production up 9.4%

Cement producers in Vietnam are estimated to have made 17.8Mt of cement in the first quarter of this year, up 9.4% YoY. The country’s cement output is estimated to stand at 5.1Mt in March, compared to the earlier figures of 7.9Mt in Jan-Feb. The Ministry of Construction forecast Vietnam’s cement consumption is forecast to stand between 54.5Mt and 56Mt this year, up 9% and 10% from a year earlier.

Holcim Indonesia sees 2010 net profit fall

PT Holcim Indonesia reported a 7.5 per cent decline YoY in net profit to IDR828bn (US$95.22m) in 2010, despite an increase in sales. The company recorded a four per cent increase in sales to IDR6trn in 2010, from IDR5.45trn in the previous year. Eamon Ginley, the president of the country’s third largest cement maker, attributed the decline in profit to foreign exchange loss. Pakistan cement manufacturers have urged Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to use the opportunity provided by the cricket match at Mohali in India to resolve the issue of cement exports to India by asking the Indian Prime Minister to allow import of cement through Wagah. Ex-Tororo Cement workers petition for redundancy packages

Up to 750 former workers of Tororo Cement in Uganda have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni for unpaid termination packages, totalling UGS84bn, 25 years after they were laid off. 

Each of the 750 workers was entitled to UGS11m, a joint total of UGS8.25b in packages, which has accumulated to UGS84bn after it accrued interest. 

 The 750 were part of the 1,000 workers whose services were terminated on January 3, 1985. But only 250 of the 1,000 employees were paid.

Dominican Republic exports 25% of annual production
