Puerto Rican cement sales drop 10%

Cement sales in Puerto Rico decreased 9.6 per cent YoY to 51,165t (or 1.26m bags), the third-consecutive YoY fall, according to the Bank of Economic Development (BDE). Cement sales had been increasing since May 2020 following the end of lockdown, peaking at 1.6m in June 2020, which represented the highest sales since 2012. By the end of the year, sales had advanced 2.8 per cent when compared with 2019.

New plant to be constructed in Libya

Libya’s National Mining Corp and Al-Shahba Cement Co have signed an agreement to construct a 1Mta cement works in Al-Shahba, south of Tobruk. The Minister of Industry and Minerals, Ahmed Abuhisa, laid the foundation stone for the establishment of the cement factory on Thursday.

Morocco’s cement deliveries expand 31% in August

Cement deliveries by Moroccan cement producers Asment Temara, Ciments de l’Atlas, Ciments du Maroc and LafargeHolcim Maroc advanced 31.1 per cent YoY to 1,132,899t from 864,441t in August 2020, according to Ipsos data published by the country’s Ministry for Housing and Urbanisation. In the first eight months of 2021 deliveries were up 19.3 per cent to 8,841,024t from 7,411,847t in the January-August 2020 period.

Chilean cement deliveries up 56% in July

Cement dispatches in Chile advanced 55.5 per cent YoY to 361,956t in July 2021 from a low base of 233,186t in July 2020, according to the Camara Chilena de Construcción (CChC). In July 2019 cement dispatches reached 317,626t. In the first seven months of 2021 an increase of 24.5 per cent to 2,507,802t was reported. This compares favourably with the 2,014,574t in the January-July 2020 period. In the 7M19 cement dispatches were at 2,382,831t.

Argentina sees 18% demand increase in August

In August 2021 the Argentine market expanded by 18.2 per cent YoY to 1,083,914t from 917,233t in August 2020 while MoM there was a 3.9 per cent improvement in offtake, according to the Asociación de Fabricantes de Cemento Portland (AFCP). Cement dispatches from Argentina’s cement producers advanced 18.8 per cent YoY and 4.1 per cent MoM to 1,096,564t in August 2021 from 922,743t and 1,053,191t, respectively. Odisha approves Jajpur cement projects

The state government of Odisha, India, has approved the proposal of My Home Industries Pvt Ltd to set up a 3Mta cement grinding unit at Badchana, Jajpur district. The project represents an investment of INR6.5bn (US$88.9m). Ramco Cements Ltd’s INR1.9bn project to expand its existing facility at Haridaspur, Jajpur district, with a 0.9Mta grinding plant was also cleared by the State Level Single Window Clearance Authority meeting.

Italy sees 32% advance in 1H production

Domestic cement output in Italy picked up by two per cent YoY in June 2021, following a YoY increase of 18 per cent in May 2021, according to Federbeton. In the January-June period output has advanced 32 per cent when compared with the year-ago period. To supplement local supply, Italy imported 151,444t of cement in May 2021, up 75 per cent YoY. Colombia sees 4% increase in cement dispatches

The Colombian cement market expanded by 3.6 per cent to 1.132Mt in July 2021 when compared with dispatches of 1.093Mt in July 2020 and by 7.5 per cent when compared with 1.113Mt in July 2019, according to the country’s statistics office, DANE. Cement sales were particularly strong in the ready-mix concrete market (+11.9 per cent YoY) while construction companies and contractors also increased their offtake by 6.4 per cent YoY.
