New plant for Yemen?

According to Al-Riyadh newspaper (March 7, 2006), Saudi businessman Hussein al-Attas announced that he has decided to build a cement factory in Sanaa, Yemen, following an approval by the General Investment Authority. Mr. al-Attas added that he will invest US$2bn in the new plant, which will produce 3Mt annually. 

German Cement industry turnover up

Importers will be allowed to bring cement into Jamaica between now and the end of August, at the reduced duty of 15 per cent, a decision made by Cabinet on Monday in response to complaints of a shortage of the product on the local market. Yanbu Cement unit hit by blaze

Saudi Yanbu Cement said a fire damaged one of four production lines at its sole plant but did not affect supplies. The firm is still trying to determine the causes of the fire which erupted early yesterday at the plant located in the Yanbu industrial zone on the Red Sea, it said in a statement. Mexico shipments to US

There was something for both sides in the cement trade agreement that U.S. and Mexican officials signed March 6. The agreement ends a 16-year dispute and lets Mexico export 3Mt annually to the US. That’s a 50 per cent jump over 2005’s level of 1.92Mt, the Commerce Dept. reports. PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa (part of the HeidelbergCement Group) said it may boost its cement capacity by 600,000t this year following a US£20m optimisation of its plant.  It also predicted production cost per ton to rise 20-25 per cent this year due to the full effect of fuel price hikes last year.
