Shares of local cement producers rose yesterday on news of a 50 per cent jump in the product price, as investors bet that business prospects would improve following the increase. YTL Cement Bhd, a unit of YTL Corp Bhd, rose nearly five per cent to close at RM2.20 yesterday. Cement Industries of Malaysia Bhd closed up five per cent at RM1.29. Nirma chairman Karsanbhai Patel today said he would unleash a price war in the cement market once the company started producing cement at its proposed 1.2Mta unit in Mahuva, near Bhavnagar, India.  He also said that the group has decided to set up a 0.3Mt capacity coke unit in the same location primarily for captive consumption by Nirma’s soda ash and cement business. Swiss cement sales up

Domestic sales of the Swiss cement industry rose 14.1 per cent year-on-year to 1.28Mt in the second quarter of 2005, the industry association Cemsuisse said on July 8, 2005.  A total 49.4 per cent of the cement deliveries were transported by rail and 50.6 per cent by road in the second quarter of 2005.  In the first half of 2005, cement sales rose 8.1 per cent year-on-year due to the higher construction activity, primarily in the building construction sector.  Cemsuisse expects a 6.0 per cen...

Despite higher production costs caused by higher fuel prices, Vietnamese cement prices will be regulated by the government until year-end, when a price hike comes into effect. According to the Portland Cement Association’s latest survey of cement suppliers in May, 23 states are currently experiencing cement shortages. The shortage, which has been ongoing since the spring of 2004, is due to both domestic and international factors.
