Darbari out of race for CCI chief, India

The counsel on behalf of the Union of India has given a statement in the Delhi High Court today that TS Darbari will not be appointed as the Chairman of the Cement Corporation of India (CCI). West China Cement Ltd plans to raise up to US$179m in a Hong Kong initial public offering, a term sheet obtained by Reuters on Monday showed. Builders have moved the Competition Commission alleging that cement firms, including Aditya Birla group firm Grasim, ACC, Gujarat Ambuja and others, have formed a price cartel and it is costing them dearly. Banco Products to invest in new Tanzanian plant

Banco Products is planning to invest US$12.3m in Lake Cement, a Tanzanian Company which is to set up greenfield project at Kimbiji, near Dar es Salaam. The project cost is estimated at US$70m and equity is to be US$24m. The capacity planned is 500,000tpa. Commercial production will begin from 2013 and market share for Lake Cement is envisaged to be about 11% at full production level.

Saudi Arabia: Local cement production down

A new report by the Saudi Ministry of Trade and Industry has indicated that the actual production of local cement companies in Saudi Arabia declined during the first half of this year by 4 per cent to 18.8Mt, compared to 19.6Mt in the comparable period last year. Irish construction activity continues to decline

Activity in the Republic of Ireland’s construction sector continued to contract in July, albeit at the weakest rate in three years, new survey data showed. Markit Economics said on Monday that the Ulster Bank construction purchasing managers’ index rose to 45.0 in July from 44.9 in the previous month. US May shipments 1% higher YoY

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reports that total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for May 2010 were about 6.3Mt. This was about 1% higher than shipments in May 2009. Shipments through May were about 25.1 Mt, down by about 6% from those of the same period in 2009. Taiwan Cement Corporation, Taiwan’s leading producer of cement, recently predicted substantial sales growth both in Taiwan and China in the second half of this year.

Lafarge may decide to close its site in Frangey, north-central France, which employs 78, according to economic news Internet site Challenges, which quoted trade union sources. Indonesian cement maker PT Semen Gresik expects to increase production in 2011 when its new plant in Sulawesi becomes operational. The new plant, currently still under construction, would raise the company’s production capacity to 20.5Mt, PT Semen Gresik President Director Dwi Sutjipto said at a press conference on the sidelines of Investor Day on Thursday.
