Cement producers in Vietnam have reportedly begun to hike prices due to rising electricity prices at the peak time for construction, according to Vietnam News. Vietnam exported 13.82Mt of cement worth US$589.95m in the 5M19, an increase of four per cent YoY in volume and 23.2 per cent in value, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. Vietnamese cement exporters are starting to take significant market share in China as they succeed in undercutting domestic producers. Imports of clinker surged by more than 150 per cent in the first four months of 2019 to 5.69Mt on the back of China's housing boom. These imports accounted for 1.4 per cent of China's clinker. Vietnamese cement sales fell by 13 per cent YoY and seven per cent MoM to 6,316,583t in April 2019, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). Of this total VICEM plants sold 2.158Mt, or three per cent less when compared with April 2018. Sales were down eight per cent from 2.338Mt in March 2019. Domestic sales in Vietnam increased 19 per cent YoY and 147 per cent MoM to 6.797Mt in March 2019, according to the latest data from the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA). In the first four months of 2019, Vietnamese cement sales have been estimated to rise eight per cent YoY to 35.45Mt, according to the Vietnam Building Materials Association. Cement prices are on the up in Vietnam following the 8.4 per cent hike in electricity prices from 20 March.
