Egypt to offer 12 licences in October

Egypt’s Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will offer 12 licenses for cement production by the end of next month, Al Mal reported, citing Ismail el-Nagdy, the authority’s chairman. The licenses will allow their each of their holders to produce 1.5Mta and will only be awarded to companies not already operating in Egypt to increase competition in the local market, the newspaper cited el-Nagdy as saying. South African August sales rise 4.6% YoY

Recent data from the Cement and Concrete Institute of South Africa shows that sales for August 2011 totaled 1.01Mt compared to 0.97Mt in 2010, representing a an increase of 4.6%.

 Year to-date sales stand at 7.18Mt, up 0.6 per cent YoY from 7.14Mt from the same period of 2010. The moving annual total (12 months to August 2011) was 10.9Mt against 11.3Mt, representing a YoY YoY contraction of 1.6 per cent (against 11.09Mt).

CRH eyes €400m Russian cement stake

CRH, may be close to doing a deal with Oleg Deripaska, the Russian billionaire for a majority stake in a Russian-based cement manufacturing business, reports the Irish Times. The Irish group did not comment yesterday, but following the publication of its interim results last month, it did say that it was looking at acquisition opportunities in Russia. Iran exports rise 13.5%

Over 4.5Mt of cement and clinker were exported in the first five months of the current Iranian year (started March 21). Secretary of the Cement Industry Employers Association affiliated to Iran’s national cement industry said Iran’s exports are up 13.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. 

 Over 60 per cent of cement produced in Iran was exported to Iraq, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Persian Gulf littoral states.

Freight One Increases Cement Transport from South Ural Plants, Russia

Freight One has increased its transport of cement from South Ural plants to Moscow region. The company hauled about 100,000t of cement from the beginning of the construction season in April (when active deliveries began to Moscow and its suburbs), through July 2011. Anjani Portland Cement Ltd plans to invest in a greenfield cement plant in Bijapur district of Karnataka. According to the company chairman KV Vishnu Raju, the plant will have a capacity of around a 1Mta and the Bijapur unit will take Anjani Portland’s capacity to over 2Mta from the present 1.16Mta.

Semen Gresik eyeing up coal trading firm, Indonesia

PT Semen Gresik, Indonesia’s biggest cement maker by volume, is considering setting up a coal-trading firm later this year to secure supply and help lower its production costs, the Kontan daily reported Tuesday.
