Cement prices in Zimbabwe have shot up from their recommended average price of US$12.50/50kg bag to US$16-20 after Lafarge Zimbabwe confirmed yesterday that one of its two mills was down. Lafarge’s local Managing Director Jonathan Shonhiwa said it was unfortunate that some retailers were taking advantage of the shortage to exploit customers. Lafarge expands rail transport from Nigerian Ewekoro works

Cement will soon be transported from Lafarge’s Ewekoro works, in Ogun state, Nigeria, to other parts of the country by rail, said the Nigeria Railway Corp’s Managing Director Seyi Sijuwade. This would result in a fall of cement prices as well as reduce traffic bottlenecks and road accidents, according to the executive. ACC achieves stabilisation at Wadi kiln, India

India’s ACC Group has  achieved production stabilisation at the world’s largest kiln at its Wadi plant, nearly five months after it was commissioned. The Wadi kiln with a capacity of 12,500tpd will produce clinker for its two satellite grinding units at Thondebhavi, near Bangaluru, and Kudithini, near Bellary. Pakistan cement sales in August 2011 fell to 2.4Mt, down 18% MoM and witnessed the sharpest MoM contraction in 21 months since September 2010. The Dangote Group of Nigeria said it will soon construct railway tracks from all its cement factories to the national railway to reduce transport costs.
