Holcim sees 20% rise in Malaysia’s large and infrastructure market

Holcim Malaysia Sdn Bhd expects a 20% increase in business from large and infrastructure projects next year, its CEO Mahanama Ralapanawa. He pointed out that Malaysia is an expanding market with limited options for developers and government-linked companies to procure high-quality cement and concrete products. Algeria’s state-owned cement companies produced 7.28Mt of cement in the first eight months of this year, against 7.27Mt a year ago. Colombia’s domestic cement shipments rose YoY by 22.2% to 917,000t in August, according to the national statistics office DANE. The highest gains were recorded in the provinces of Casanare (+64.8%), Norte de Santander (+49.9%) and Cesar (+47%). The outlook for Saudi Arabia’s cement sector remains strong during 2011 with good demand growth and stable prices, despite the usual slowdown over the summer months, NCB Capital said. Cement production in Romania rose by 8.1% YoY to 3.18Mt in 1H2011. Cement sales increased by 2.4% to 2.95Mt over the same period, according to CIROM, the Romanian association of cement producers. Cement and clinker exports totaled about 111,000t, against zero exports the previous year. The Romanian cement market is dominated by HeidelbergCement’s Carpatcement, Holcim Romania and Lafarge Ciment, which operate a total of 16.9Mta cement capacity in nine cement works.

UltraTech Cement Ltd. may reportedly buy a cargo of 75,000t of power-station coal from Russia after it issued a tender for two shipments. According to reports, the Vedanta Group plans to buy two cargoes of imported thermal coal of Indonesian or South African origin. India may need to import 114mn tons of coal for the year ending March 2012 to plug a supply gap.
